Dr. Erica Slack, a nurse practitioner at the District 21 Health Center, has been recognized as one of the Illinois Nurses Foundation’s 2026 40 Under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders, an honor that celebrates rising nursing professionals making a lasting impact on health care across the state.

Presented annually by the Illinois Nurses Foundation, the award recognizes 40 nurses under the age of 40 who demonstrate excellence in leadership, innovation, advocacy, education and patient care while helping shape the future of the nursing profession. Dr. Slack will be honored during the foundation’s celebration on Sept. 17.

Since joining the District 21 Health Center, Dr. Slack has helped expand access to primary and preventive health care for students and staff. The Health Center, which opened in 2024 through a partnership with Advocate Health, provides no-cost medical services regardless of insurance status, helping remove barriers to care and ensuring students are healthy, present and ready to learn.

“I’m truly honored to be recognized among this group of emerging leaders,” Dr. Slack said. “This award reflects the impact of a collaborative effort—working alongside dedicated colleagues, school partners, and our broader community to expand what’s possible in delivering care. It also represents a responsibility and a commitment to build on this momentum by leading with purpose. I look forward to continuing to redefine how care is delivered—driving innovation and advancing meaningful change that expands access, elevates the standard of care, and helps shape the future of health care.”

For Dr. Slack, the recognition also shines a light on the growing role school-based health centers play in improving the health of children and staff. By bringing care directly into the school community, she said, providers have a unique opportunity to address health concerns early, build trust with families, and help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

“Dr. Slack’s impact extends far beyond the exam room,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Connolly. “She has helped create a welcoming environment where students and staff know they will receive exceptional care and unwavering support. This recognition is a testament to her leadership, expertise and dedication, and our entire District 21 community is proud to celebrate this well-earned honor.”

The District 21 Health Center serves as an extension of the district’s commitment to supporting the whole child by making high-quality health care more accessible for the district community. Dr. Slack’s recognition highlights the important role nurses play in strengthening both student well-being and the communities they serve.
